NOURISH MEALS IN MOTION!

Columbia Valley Food and Farm is dedicated to building a stronger local food system through food recovery, partnerships with other community organizations, farms, and producers concerned with food security. Because we believe good food should nourish people, not go to waste, we have begun our Nourish food recovery program, which we believe will grow to become a known entity for its ability to reduce food waste and support food insecure people in our community.

Lara MacCormack is the chef and volunteer coordinator for our first pilot program developed in collaboration with FAMILY DYNAMIX & United Way BC.

We are delivering 3 meals per week to 30 seniors identified by FD as needing significant support to get the nutrition needed to sustain their health and well being. These meals are being prepared by Lara and a team of volunteers (MORE NEEDED!) each week using food recovered from various grocers such as Sobeys and supplemented by purchased food as necessary.

These meals include a delicious main course and dessert for each of the 3 days and will need to be delivered by volunteers. We envision this also being a social point of contact for the recipients. We anticipate rapid growth of this program as Jennifer Lindal of Family Dynamix has indicated that the need in the community for nutritional support for food insecure seniors is great.

One of our main challenges is a home for the Nourish program which would ideally contain both dry, frozen and cold storage, sorting capacity and a commercial kitchen. As food prices continue to rise, food security has become one of the most urgent issues facing families and elder adults in the Columbia Valley.

It is our belief that this program can help address this critical issue.
